Create28: Mocassins

I have a confession to make.  Boots and booties are not my favorite fall footwear.  Gasp, I know, what kind of personal style blogger am I?

While I love my cognac riding boots and have multiple pairs of suede booties sitting in my closet, moccasins are my favorite cozy shoes to slip into on a casual fall day!  There is something so effortlessly cool about a pair of moccasins.  They state, "this is who I am, I'm comfy and that's all that matters!"

Despite the inherent chicness of a pair of moccasins, their best feature is that they are so darn comfortable!  Who doesn't want to wear a pair of shoes that feel like slippers?  This fall, a stretchy pair of skinnies, a soft sweater and a vest make for the perfect, comfy Saturday uniform (yes, I know it's Tuesday but I took these pictures on Saturday #truthfulblogger).  By the way, this sweater (which might just be my favorite piece this fall) is on super sale in several different colors.  I want one of each, please!

After years of wearing moccasins purchased from Target, I decided it was time to step it up and buy some good-quality moccasins (I did love my Target pair but I wore them until they ripped last year).  I recently invested in a pair from Minnetonka and I couldn't be happier!  Have you checked-out Minnetonka before?  Not only do they have classic moccasins but they have some really fun colors and designs, too (I'm eyeing you, hot pink pair).  And if I can't convince you to step out of your boots, you could wear a pair of moccasin boots!  Here are some of my favorites!

Do you love moccasins as much as I do?  Share your love on Insta (#Create28FallLooks) and by linking-up on Monday.  I also hope that you'll stop back tomorrow because Casey will be sharing a look featuring falls hottest denim trend: flares!

Create28: Fall Colors and a Link-Up

Happy Monday and welcome to the first link-up for Create28: Fall Looks!  We hope that you've joined us in creating new outfits using our seasonal prompts and we want to see what you've come up with.  You can find the link-up below but first, let's talk about fall colors!

Fall colors can encompass such a wide variety of hues, but my favorite colors this time of year are deep, bold and dark.  I know that I can wear this plum dress any time of the year but the rich color just begs to be worn when the leaves finally start changing.  My natural inclination was to reach for my mustard cardigan (a fall closet staple, in my opinion), but then I realized that I'd worn that combination before.  And this is Create28, meaning I really want to find some new combinations hiding in my closet.

This teal cardigan gets love all year-round but when I paired it with the plum dress, I knew I'd found a great fall color combination!  Metallic accessories added a perfect pop of warmth and interest.

I love that the Create28 prompts can be flexible!  What fall colors will you choose to wear today?  Will you stick with Pantone's fall colors or will you pick a combination that shouts fall just to you?  Make sure that you pop over to Carrie and Casey's blogs to see which colors they've chosen!

What I'm Wearing:
Dress: Target (similar, similar)
Cardigan: LOFT Outlet (similar, similar)
Tassel Necklace: LOFT (similar, similar)
Flats: DSW (similar, similar)

Don't forget to check back tomorrow because I'll be talking about some of the comfiest footwear of the season: moccasins!

And now it's time for that link-up I promised!

Create28: Color Mixing

While I was putting together my first Create28, I tried to mix three different colors together to create a new look. I stuck with solids so I wouldn't muddy the waters too much. Now here I am again to do a little color mixing. I have found this is a look a really enjoy wearing. There are different ways in which to mix colors. One way is to mix shades of one color. I have done this in the past with a monochromatic look and a neutral look from Create28 Lovely Looks. These looks stayed along the lines of one color and mixing tones or shades of that color. I also put together three different colors and created these looks. color mixing collage

As I began to put a new look together I wondered what colors I should choose to mix. I thought about choosing two neutrals or muted colors and use a pop with a third color. Then I had to think about what's in my closet currently for the fall season. Some of my options but not all:
  • Black, grey & red
  • Grey, blue & purple
  • Grey, burgundy & navy
  • Brown, navy & purple
As I was putting pieces together, I thought it was time to reinstate my favorite pants. They are my grey skinnies {not denim} and I wore them shamefully often last fall and winter. With that as my base I wanted to grab wine and navy to mix with for a look.

With this look I wore a cami under the 3/4 length cardigan. I added a navy belt and a tassel necklace which also had a blue accent. These rich fall colors easily came together and a simple pattern can be found in the flats. In this look all the colors seem to be somewhat equal so I thought I would change that up and try another look. I still stayed in the rich colors that I love for fall. I would say jewel tone{ish} is where I'm landing for color mixing.
  color mixing-grey+teal

Here I used blue as an accent and made the teal-green the center and focus color. Another great color for fall and versatile in my ways in any wardrobe. There are three colors but the balance is different from the previous look and the ones from my first Create28. Does color mixing seem confusing? It might depend on what colors you typically have in your wardrobe. I think I gravitate toward neutrals, solids and jewel tones. I have some patterns but when I stand and look at my pieces this is what makes up a majority of my pieces. In case you want a little help with color mixing, you can check out the Pinterest board below.

Create28: Fall Tunics

Happy Saturday, pretty girls! I'm excited today because I am co-hosting with the gorgeous Megan from The Fashionista Mama. I love Megan's style and her family is just adorable! Go check her out!

Today it's all about Fall Tunics. I came to know, love and APPRECIATE the tunics and leggings look last fall. I had been skeptical of leggings because they reminded me too much of yoga pants! But once I found the right pair(s) of leggings, there was no going back! From then on, it was all about my quest to find the perfect tunics..you know..ones that cover all of your lady parts...FRONT AND BACK!!!

Here are my 3 favorite ways to wear tunics in the fall ~

Look #1 ~ Casual
Pretty much as comfy and casual as it gets for fall short of sweats and a big sweater! A chambray tunic and fringe scarf are great casual pieces, but still look polished.

Leggings: Hue/Nordstrom (exact, great option)
Chambray: Target (exact, option)
Scarf: via Jane.com (almost identical)
Boots: Frye (exact, similar)

Look #2: Classic
I got this Lush tunic at the Nordstrom anniversary sale and have already worn it a handful of times. It's a great transition piece and can be worn with shorts, jeans, pants....or leggings! It's super long (especially on my 5'4" frame), so it more than covers the LPs (Lady Parts). I love cropped leggings with flats while I am waiting for the weather to cool down!

Leggings: Nordstrom Brand  (exact, similar)
Tunic: Nordstrom (exact)
Necklace: Stella & Dot (exact)
Leopard Flats (similar, similar)

Look #3: Cozy
This outfit is perfect when the temps start to drop (for good!) and you start to crave coziness and layers! I picked up this sweater tunic from Nordie's last year and wore it so much last fall and winter. I found this "blanket scarf" at Sears (of ALL places! i think i went in to get a water filter for my 'fridge and came out with a scarf!) and i like it because it's a lot less bulky than the traditional giant blanket scarves. It's still big and gives the same look, but without all the fuss.

I call my boot cuffs "California Boot Cuffs" because I don't care for super thick socks or cuffs. So I just took and thin pair of socks and cut off the toe...voila! Boot cuffs!

Leggings: Hue/Nordstrom (exact, great option)
Tunic: Nordstrom/Caslon (similar, cute option, cute option)
Scarf: Sears (similar, similar)
Boots: Frye (exact, similar)
Boot Cuffs: DIY'ed :)

I will leave you with more super cute tunics that should pass the "Covering Your Lady Parts" test :)

Blogging Besties: Pattern + Texture

Hi, all! It's Friday, so I'm back with another round of Blogging Besties! Last week Whitney looked oh-so-cozy in an outfit chock full of fall colors!

I chose to pass on the element "pattern + texture" and pair a floral pattern scarf with a sweater dress! It was the perfect transitional look for one of our first truly chilly days this fall! The sweater dress is warm but not too thick, and the pretty pattern of the scarf keeps things light. I was also (finally) able to break out my riding boots! This outfit also doubled as my "go-to" fall look for Create28 since the first things I grab in the fall are scarves and boots!

Dress: Old Navy (similarsimilarsimilar)
Scarf: Francesca's (similarsimilarsimilar)
Boots: Target (exactsimilarsimilar)
Belt: Old Navy (similarsimilarsimilar)

The elements of this outfit are: sweater dress, patterned scarf, a skinny belt, fall boots, floral, and a fall transition piece!

It is also time that we announce a change we're making to Blogging Besties--we've decided to remove the linkup element from the feature. If you do choose to continue playing along, please comment or email us with a link to your look and we will include it in the next week's post. Thank you to those who have put time and effort into "passing on" pieces with us and we look forward to seeing more outfits from you in the future! So for now, check out Selah and Maricel's looks from last week and we will see you in a week!

Create28: Plaid

Did you know that today is Plaidurday?  Are you wearing your plaid?

I received this cozy buffalo plaid jacket in one of my Le Tote deliveries in early September.  For weeks it was too warm to even think about wearing a jacket, but I kept my Le Tote anyways because I just had to wear the jacket before I returned my goods and received another special delivery.

While I awaited the cool, crisp morning that meant I could break-out this jacket, I thought through so many outfit options.  I ultimately decided that pairing buffalo plaid with stripes is a perfect combination of classic yet creative.

What is your favorite way to wear plaid?  With stripes and booties like me?  As a scarf?  Perhaps a plaid shirtdress?  Maybe you've checked-out Adam Lippes for Target?  In any case, show us what you've got on Insta (#Create28FallLooks) and make sure to link-up on Monday.  Here are some more plaid looks that I'm loving for fall!

Follow Whitney à la mode's board Plaid on Pinterest.

I hope you'll come back tomorrow to see how Casey styles a fall tunic!

Create28: Fall Go-To Look

Can you believe it's already time for another Create28 seasonal challenge?  Where did the last two months go?!  In any case, Carrie, Casey and I are super excited for you to join us in creating 28 brand-new outfits for our Fall Looks challenge!

Today we're talking about our go-to looks for fall!  I actually struggled a bit in nailing down one particular combination that I'm constantly reaching for during the fall.  I love fall style so much that my looks are varied and it's hard to choose a favorite!  It's a good thing Whitney à la mode can serve as my own personal style diary!  I combed through my previous fall posts and discovered that I often pair a scarf with skirts or dresses.

Earlier this week, I mentioned that lightweight scarves are my favorite pieces to wear while transitioning from summer to fall.  I adore wearing dresses and skirts so throwing on a scarf is a natural way to add interest, warmth and a little fall spirit.  I can easily take this look into the colder weather by adding tights and cardigans or jackets.

I'm totally digging olive skirts lately and I loved wearing this neutral look with a pop of leopard print!

Take a look at a few of the other ways that I've paired a scarf with a skirt or dress!  Which is your favorite?  Is this a look that you would wear?

What is your go-to look for fall?  We want to see it!  You can show us on Instagram with the hashtag #Create28FallLooks or by linking-up on Monday.  And don't forget to pop over and see Carrie and Casey's favorite looks!  Need some more inspiration?  Check-out our Pinterest board!
